The 2018 Malawi Population and Housing Census report was released on 7 June 2019. Some highlights of the report include the following:
- The total population is 17,563,749 and has increased by 35 percent between 2008 and 2018 representing an intercensal growth rate of 2.9 percent per annum
- The Southern Region had the highest population with 44 percent of the total population. Central Region is the second most populous with 43 percent while Northern Region constitutes 13 percent of the total population
- At regional level, Central Region had the highest intercensal growth rate of 3.1 percent per annum followed by the Northern Region at 3.0 percent and Southern Region at 2.7 percent.
- Among the cities, Mzuzu city experienced the highest intercensal growth rate at 5.4 percent followed by Lilongwe city at 3.8 percent, Zomba city at 2.5 percent and Blantyre city at 2.0 percent.
- At district level, Machinga had the highest intercensal growth rate of 3.9 percent followed by Mangochi at 3.6 percent while Thyolo had the lowest intercensal population growth rate of 2.0 percent
