UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.

Since 1979, UNFPA has been working with the Malawi Government to improve the sexual and reproductive health, promote gender equality and empowerment of women and also promote integration of population dynamics in planning for development.

Guided by the Global strategic plan which aims at Ending unmet need for family planning, Ending preventable maternal deaths and Ending gender-based violence and harmful practice, the 8th country programme (2019-2023) focusses on the following

Sexual and reproductive health and rights
Improve capacities to provide high-quality integrated sexual and reproductive health services and information to the most marginalized women and young people.

Adolescents and Youth
Empower young people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and rights, exercise leadership and participate in development 

Gender equality and women’s empowerment
Improve capacities Government, Civil Society Organizations and communities to prevent and address gender-based violence, end child marriages and sexual exploitation

Population Dynamics
Improve responsiveness, targeting and impact of plans policies, programmes among public and private institutions by mainstreaming demographic intelligence

The country programme will use multiple strategies to achieve the programme objectives, including policy advocacy and dialogue; knowledge management and strategic partnerships at national level; and service delivery and capacity development interventions in five districts (Nkhata-bay, Chiradzulu, Mangochi, Dedza and Mchinji). Interventions will continue to focus on these districts to consolidate gains from the seventh country programme and to scale up interventions across the whole of the districts.
