In 2023, UNFPA Malawi achieved significant advancements in addressing sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and youth empowerment. Key efforts included the implementation of the Safe Delivery App tailored to local needs, enhancing obstetric and neonatal health outcomes. UNFPA also focused on capacity building, notably through training in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), which improved medical certification for the cause of death.
The organization successfully repaired 289 obstetric fistula cases, exceeding its target and significantly aiding affected women and girls. They also tackled gender-based violence (GBV) by training health workers and establishing gender-based violence referral pathways in various districts, greatly improving the reporting and handling of GBV cases.
Efforts to empower young people were highlighted by the development of parent-child communication guidelines and comprehensive sexuality education, reaching tens of thousands and fostering better youth engagement in health issues. Additionally, UNFPA responded swiftly to humanitarian crises like Tropical Cyclone Freddy, reallocating resources to provide critical support and distribute dignity kits to affected women and girls. This response was instrumental in maintaining access to essential health services during emergencies.
The report underscores the powerful impact of collaboration and integrated approaches in addressing complex health and gender disparities in Malawi, setting a solid foundation for future initiatives to further enhance the well-being of the Malawian population.
