Welcoming Young Hong- New UNFPA Representative in Malawi

Young Hong, the new UNFPA Representative presented his letters of credence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as he starts his tour of duty in Malawi. Presenting the papers, Young outlined the role that UNFPA plays in promoting universal access to sexual and reproductive health in Malawi.

She commended the Malawi government for the great efforts they have been making to address the challenges in the areas that UNFPA supports. She reiterated UNFPA commitment to supporting the Government of Malawi with SRHR programmes that are in line with government priorities. “I am looking forward to your support always” she said.

Emmanuel Fabiano, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in accepting the letters, recognized the value and support of UNFPA towards the Malawi Government. “With the President of Malawi designated as the youth champion, who in 2016 requested the AU to declare 2017 as the year of the youth in Africa, there is need for UNFPA and the government to look at youth programmes that are ongoing and plan on what more needs to be done” he said

He also emphasized that if UNFPA is to have impact, then issue of aligning programmes with government priorities is very important.

Young brings to Malawi over 16 years of experience in international and local development, as well as strengths in policy analysis, youth programming and capacity development.

Prior to her appointment as Malawi Country Representative, Young served as the Deputy Representative for the Mozambique Country office. She takes over from Dan Odallo who retired in January 2018.
