The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senior Chief Theresa Kachindamoto. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, the people of Dedza, and the entire nation of Malawi during this time of profound loss.

Senior Chief Kachindamoto was a trailblazer, a visionary and a fearless advocate for the rights and dignity of women and girls. She dedicated her life to ending harmful practices, most notably child marriage, and to ensuring that every girl had the opportunity to complete her education and pursue her dreams. Her tireless efforts resulted in the annulment of thousands of child marriages and the reintegration of girls into school, transforming countless lives.

Her courage, unwavering commitment, and visionary leadership inspired change not only in Malawi but across the world. A long-standing partner of UNFPA Senior Chief Kachindamoto worked closely with us and other stakeholders to advance policies and community-based solutions that protect adolescent girls and promote gender equality.

Her leadership proved that cultural authority can be a powerful force for positive change. Senior Chief Kachindamoto has left an enduring legacy that will continue to protect and empower generations of Malawian women and girls.

We mourn the loss of a remarkable leader, but we also celebrate her life, her achievements, and the hope she gave to countless adolescent girls and young people. Senior Chief Kachindamoto’s voice may be silent, but her impact will echo for years to come.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

UNFPA Malawi Representative, OIC
